Naloxone Training

LAW ENFORCEMENT:

  • Law Enforcement will need to contact the Alabama Department of Mental Health to request naloxone. Please email narcanadmh@mh.alabama.gov to request naloxone for your department.

VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS

In the following counties: Blount, Cullman, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Lawrence, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, St. Clair, Shelby, Walker and Winston, Jefferson and Tuscaloosa
  • Volunteer Fire Departments in the listed counties will need to contact Project Freedom out of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to request naloxone. Please email wendi.hogue@ua.edu to request naloxone for your department.
  • If your county is not listed, reach out to NarcanADMH@mh.alabama.gov to request naloxone

The Jefferson County Department of Health is offering free, 1-hour trainings on how to recognize, prevent, and respond to an opioid overdose by using naloxone. Naloxone is a prescription medication used to reverse an opioid overdose. Opioids are substances such as heroin, fentanyl, or prescription pain medication.

What Is Naloxone?

Naloxone is a prescription medicine that reverses an opioid overdose. It cannot be used to get high and it is not addictive.

Who Can Attend?

  • People worried that a loved one or community member is at risk for overdosing on opioids.
  • People who work with populations at risk for overdosing on an opioid.

What Will I Learn?

  • What an opioid is.
  • How to recognize, respond to, and prevent an opioid overdose.
  • How to use intranasal naloxone to reverse an overdose.
  • Resources for getting help for you or a loved one struggling with substance use disorder.

What Will I Get for Completing the Training?

A free naloxone kit containing the medication and training on how to recognize and reverse an opioid overdose.
