International Overdose Awareness Day 2021

Published: 08/23/21

Join the Jefferson County Department of Health on August 31, 2021 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. CST to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day with a webinar discussion with Dr. Jerome Adams, 20th U.S. Surgeon General, moderated by Lauren Sisler. Register here.

Dr. Adams will discuss the worsening opioid overdose crisis in the U.S., his experience as the Indiana State Health Commissioner during the nation’s largest HIV & Hepatitis C outbreak associated with IV drug use, the impact of substance use disorder on his life, his work as “America’s Doctor” fighting the issues of substance use disorder and ensuing stigma, mental illness, and the opioid epidemic, and the importance of the work being done to combat these public health crises. Lauren Sisler, an award-winning sports broadcaster for ESPN and SEC Network and host at AL.com, will moderate this discussion, as well as share how substance use disorder has impacted her life. The audience is encouraged to submit their own questions throughout the event.

Dr. Jerome Adams is the 20th U.S. Surgeon General, a member of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s opioid task force, Indiana’s former State Health Commissioner, and a brother to someone with substance use disorder. Dr. Adams grew up poor and Black in a Southern rural community, and went on to become “America’s Doctor”, committed to fighting issues that his own family and community experienced.

Lauren Sisler unexpectedly lost both of her parents within hours of each other due to their concealed battle with addiction. She now shares her story to help individuals who also feel trapped by substance use disorder and the stigma that surrounds it.
