Public Health Pharmacy

The Department of Health provides clinical pharmacy services to support the medical and disease control staff, as well as to provide direct care to patients in our clinics. Clinical pharmacy services at JCDH are provided in a joint arrangement between the department and the Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy. Doctors of Pharmacy (PharmD) work alongside physicians in our clinics to assist patients with understanding their medications and helping them make the best use of their medications. Our pharmacists also advise our physicians on medication selection, and provide critical drug information services to ensure patients have access to the most effective medications at the lowest possible cost. Clinical pharmacists work with disease control specialists and epidemiologists to ensure availability of pharmacy services during times of natural and man made disasters and disease outbreaks such as pandemic influenza. The department is also home to the nation’s first post-doctoral residency program in public health pharmacy practice. In addition, the department offers appointments with pharmacists for smoking cessation counseling and diabetes education and management. To make an appointment with a clinical pharmacist for one of these services, contact your local health center.
